Jeff Green No. 66 Best Buy HAAS CNC Racing Chevrolet Michigan Preview

CHASSIS: Haas CNC Racing Chassis No. 28 – This chassis is the same car Jeff Green drove at both Pocono Raceway races this season, as well as the June Michigan event. Green posted a 19th-place finish with this car at Pocono Raceway earlier this month.

MOST RECENT RACE AT MICHIGAN – Jeff Green and the No. 66 team finished 36th in the June 17 NEXTEL Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway. Green, who was a lap down to the race leaders, was lined up on the inside lane for a restart around lap 75. When the green flag was displayed, Ryan Newman attempted to duck between Green and the race leader, and the two drivers made contact. The fender of Green’s car was damaged in the incident, and he eventually finished the event four laps down to race winner Carl Edwards.

TESTING AT KENTUCKY – Jeff Green and the No. 66 Best Buy Racing team are scheduled to test at Kentucky Speedway on Wednesday, August 15, in preparation for this weekend’s race at Michigan International Speedway.

THIS PLACE LOOKS FAMILIAR – Jeff Green has 16 NEXTEL Cup Series starts at Michigan International Speedway. The only track where Green has more Cup starts is Pocono Raceway, where he has competed in 19 events.

Q&A WITH DRIVER JEFF GREEN:

You’ve posted top-20 finishes the past couple of weeks. Do you feel like you and the team are progressing? “I do feel like we’re progressing. Our car was pretty decent at Pocono, and we had a really good car at Watkins Glen, but the cautions just didn’t fall our way. I really think we had a top-10 or top-12 car this past weekend, so that’s exciting.

“As far as Michigan, I’m hoping for good things. The track has always been ‘hit or miss’ for me, more than a lot of other tracks we go to. I really enjoy racing here, but it doesn’t like me sometimes.

“We’ve made a few changes to the pit crew over the past couple of weeks, and I think that’s really going to help us. There have been several races where our pit stops have really cost us, so I’m hoping we’ve eliminated that variable moving forward.”

Q&A WITH CREW CHIEF HAROLD HOLLY:

What are your thoughts on Michigan International Speedway? “The personality of Michigan (International Speedway) is that it grates the tires, kind of like Darlington (Raceway). It’s not nearly as bad as Darlington in that respect, but the asphalt is porous, like Darlington. It’s a very temperature-sensitive track, and with us having already raced there this year and put a lot of rubber down, I think it’s going to be pretty slick. I base that off how much more slick Pocono (Raceway) was from the first race to the second.”

What do you hope to accomplish at the test at Kentucky Speedway on Wednesday, Aug. 15? “We’re still working on our intermediate track program. We’ve really made some pretty extensive gains, but there’s a lot more room for improvement. Most of the day will be spent on aero(dynamics) stuff, but we’ll also do some testing on some front geometry stuff later in the day.

“It’s all about getting better at the tracks like Michigan, California (Speedway), Kansas (Speedway) and Texas (Motor Speedway). We’ve still got a number of mile-and-a-half and two-mile tracks coming up on the schedule, and we’ve got to get better at those places.”

JEFF GREEN’S HISTORY AT MICHIGAN INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY: In 16 NEXTEL Cup Series starts at Michigan International Speedway, Jeff Green’s best qualifying effort was a 13th-place starting spot, which he accomplished twice, in August, 1997, and June, 2003. His best finish was a ninth-place run, which came in August, 2002.

In seven NASCAR Busch Series starts at Michigan, Green has two top-10 starting spots, and a third-place finish in the August, 2002, race.

HAAS CNC RACING’S HISTORY AT MICHIGAN INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY: In nine NEXTEL Cup Series starts at Michigan, the Haas CNC Racing team has two sixth-place starting spots (August, 2003, and August, 2005, with drivers Jason Leffler and Mike Bliss, respectively). The team’s best finish was a 19th-place run by driver Jack Sprague in June, 2003.
